A. REA (SONNY) - Pilot
Sonny
began flying with the Virginia Department of Aviation
(DOAV) in December 1997 and with HeloAir in January
1998. An ATP Type Rated (FW & RW) pilot, Sonny serves
as the Lead Pilot on the TurboCommander 1000, Command
Pilot on the Citation SII and SIC on the KingAir 200.
In addition to flight duties, Sonny monitors the licensing/registration
of private airports/heliports in Virginia. Sonny also
serves as the State Aviation Representative in the Virginia
Emergency Operations Center. Sonny maintains his RW
(Part 135) qualifications and actively participates
in LifeNet (human organ) transplant flights.
Prior to joining
the DOAV and HeloAir, Sonny served 20 years in the US
Marine Corps as a pilot and retired Oct '97 as a Major.
During this Marine Corps career he served two tours
of duty in Beirut, Lebanon, participated in Operation
Urgent Fury (Grenada Invasion), was a US Navy Flight
Instructor in Pensacola, Fl., served in HMX-1 (the Presidential
Helicopter Squadron), participated in Operation Full
Accounting (recovery of Missing In Action from Vietnam
War) in Cambodia, participated in contingency operations
in the Adriatic Sea area and off the coast of Somalia,
and was the USMC Search and Rescue Program Monitor/Evaluator.
Prior to his USMC
career, Sonny also served 7 years in the Virginia Air
National Guard as an enlisted avionics technician on
the F-105 "Thunderchief."
Sonny resides
in Glen Allen, Va. with his wife Susan and son Stephen.
His daughter Stephanie and granddaughter Hannah also
reside in Glen Allen, Va.
